“Injustice” Claims Rise as Hardik Pandya Overlooked for T20I Captaincy

Former India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been a prominent figure in cricket news for several months, particularly since assuming the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians franchise. His omission from consideration for the captaincy of Team India’s T20I squad has drawn significant attention and criticism, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and selectors opting instead for Suryakumar Yadav. While Yadav has shown promise as a leader in limited opportunities, many believe Pandya was unfairly passed over.
Sanjay Bangar, former India batter, acknowledged Yadav’s leadership credentials but voiced concern over the decision’s fairness to Pandya, who had been seen as the natural successor to Rohit Sharma in the T20I captaincy role.

“I am somewhat surprised that Hardik isn’t the T20 team captain, as before the last T20 World Cup, it appeared he would take on the role if Rohit hadn’t become captain and Hardik hadn’t been injured then,” Bangar remarked on Star Sports.
“The team seemed to be moving in that direction, and the selectors seemed to be on that path. This sudden change troubles me somewhat. Reports suggest that the selection committee chairman and coach have spoken with Hardik Pandya,” he added.
Bangar emphasized Yadav’s leadership experience in domestic cricket, including his captaincy of Mumbai, suggesting he is well-equipped to lead at the international level. However, he maintained that Pandya’s exclusion was disappointing.
Even before the 2024 T20 World Cup began, speculation was rife that Pandya might lead the team, with Rohit Sharma expected to step down. Therefore, the decision to appoint Yadav as T20I captain, while sidelining Pandya even for the deputy role, has left many puzzled.
