Mercedes Aims for Third Consecutive Victory at Scorching Hungaroring
Lewis Hamilton's Pursuit of Record Extends to Historic Circuit

Mercedes enters the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend with the momentum of two successive wins, eyeing a rare hat-trick at the challenging Hungaroring. Lewis Hamilton, who boasts a record eight victories at this circuit, returns determined to extend his dominance, having secured his most recent pole position here just last year.
The prospect of Mercedes competing for three consecutive wins seemed improbable earlier this season, especially after a 2023 dominated by Red Bull and Max Verstappen. However, recent triumphs, including George Russell’s unexpected victory in Austria and Hamilton’s emotional ninth win at Silverstone, have revitalized their campaign.
“I love Hungary,” remarked Hamilton, reflecting on his emotional connection with the track. “The car is starting to really, really come alive and feel great.”
Hamilton’s affinity with Hungary dates back to his debut season in 2007 with McLaren, where he clinched his maiden victory. Since then, he has continued to excel, adding further wins in 2009, 2012, and multiple times with Mercedes.
A podium finish this weekend would mark Hamilton’s 200th career podium, while another pole position would extend his record to 10 poles at the Hungaroring. His teammate George Russell, who claimed his first pole position here in 2022, will also be aiming to capitalize on Mercedes’ recent qualifying strength.
Hungary, often likened to ‘Monaco without the walls,’ poses unique challenges with its narrow track and limited overtaking opportunities. Mercedes has dominated qualifying here in recent years, securing the last four poles, highlighting their advantage in single-lap pace.
However, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen remains a formidable opponent, seeking his third consecutive win at Hungary to maintain his championship lead. Verstappen’s quest is pivotal for Red Bull, aiming to avoid their longest winless streak since 2021 and consolidate their position in the constructors’ championship.
“We had a brilliant race in Hungary last year,” stated Verstappen, emphasizing Red Bull’s strong history at the circuit. “Hopefully, we can achieve another good team result this year.”
Meanwhile, McLaren, buoyed by Lando Norris’s strong performances, including a significant points haul in recent races, poses a threat to both Mercedes and Red Bull. Sergio Perez, struggling for form and consistency, faces mounting pressure to deliver for Red Bull amidst speculation about his future.
As the season approaches its mid-point with races in Hungary and Belgium before the summer break, Ferrari is eager to regain momentum and fend off McLaren’s advancing challenge in the standings. Carlos Sainz, acknowledging the team’s technical challenges, remains optimistic about their prospects at the challenging Hungaroring circuit.
The Hungarian Grand Prix promises thrilling battles among the top teams, with Mercedes aiming to capitalize on their recent successes and Hamilton’s historic affinity with the track, while Red Bull and McLaren vie for crucial championship points in the scorching heat of the Hungaroring.
