“Argentina Sacks Sports Undersecretary Over Messi Racism Apology Demand”
"Controversy Surrounds National Team's Behavior During Copa America Celebrations"

The Argentine government has dismissed Julio Garro from his position as Sports Undersecretary after he insisted that Lionel Messi issue an apology for racist chants heard during the Copa America victory festivities. Garro, who took office in March, called for apologies from Messi, as well as from AFA president Tapia, regarding derogatory chants targeting France and Kylian Mbappe.
A video shared by Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez on Instagram sparked outrage for its discriminatory content, including remarks about the African heritage of French players. Although Messi’s involvement in the video remains unclear, Garro’s demands drew significant attention.
In response to Garro’s statements, Argentina’s President Javier Millei’s Office emphasized the government’s stance on not dictating actions to the national team or any citizen. Garro subsequently apologized, stating that his comments were not intended to offend and offered his resignation.
The incident drew criticism from various quarters, including African-descended French players and the French Football Association (FFF), which plans to lodge a formal complaint with FIFA. Enzo Fernandez, in light of the backlash, issued an apology, distancing himself from the discriminatory remarks.
Chelsea player Wesley Fofana condemned the video as “uninhibited racism,” prompting Chelsea to initiate internal disciplinary measures against Fernandez.
