Paris Olympics 2024: Rohan Bopanna and Sumit Nagal Lead India’s Tennis Ambitions
Reclaiming Tennis Glory After 28 Years

The 1996 Atlanta Olympics remain a milestone for Indian tennis, thanks to Leander Paes’ historic bronze medal. As the sport of tennis remains largely dominated by European countries, India is determined to relive that success at the Paris Olympics in 2024, aiming to end a 28-year medal drought.
The Contingent Representing India
India’s tennis contingent for the Paris Olympics will consist of three athletes. Veteran Rohan Bopanna, a seasoned Olympian who previously competed in London 2012 and Rio 2016, will partner with N. Sriram Balaji in the men’s doubles. Sumit Nagal, a rising star in Indian tennis, will compete in the men’s singles.
Bopanna, now 44, secured his Olympic spot by maintaining a top-10 ranking in doubles since November of last year. His remarkable achievements include winning his first Grand Slam doubles title at the Australian Open in 2023, where he and partner Matt Ebden triumphed. This victory catapulted Bopanna to the world No. 1 ranking in doubles, making him the oldest player in the Open Era to win a major men’s doubles title.
Nagal, who recently climbed 18 places to reach the top 68 in the ATP rankings, will compete in singles. He secured his Olympic berth by demonstrating impressive form over the past year. Nagal’s consistency earned him a second consecutive Olympic appearance, after reaching the second round in Tokyo 2021.
