BCCI’s Stern Mandate Amid India vs Sri Lanka Squad Announcement That Will Impact Future Selections
The BCCI’s media statement announcing the India cricket squad for the Sri Lanka tour has sparked significant discussion. The selection for both the ODI and T20I squads included notable choices and omissions, with Suryakumar Yadav’s promotion to T20I captain and Hardik Pandya’s removal from the leadership group being primary talking points. However, a key line in the statement sent a strong message: the BCCI will “continue to monitor player availability and participation in the upcoming domestic cricket season, 2024-25.” This clearly underscores the importance of domestic cricket performance for those aspiring to represent the national team.
Assam’s Riyan Parag has been included in the squad, thanks to his outstanding performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored seven half-centuries. This move reflects the national selection committee’s renewed emphasis on domestic cricket achievements.
Rookie pacer Harshit Rana, who claimed 19 wickets for Kolkata Knight Riders in this year’s IPL and was selected for the first two Zimbabwe T20Is, has been included in the ODI squad. The selectors believe this is the ideal time to expand their pool of pacers and assess their performance at the elite level.
According to a PTI report, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has emphasized that even star cricketers must make themselves available for domestic matches when they are free from national duty, with exceptions made for players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah. However, the BCCI expects other Test specialists to participate in at least one or two Duleep Trophy games in August as preparation for the Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
“This time there is no zonal selection committee for the Duleep Trophy. Only the national selection committee will pick Duleep teams,” a source revealed. “All Test team contenders will be picked. For Rohit, Virat, and Bumrah, it will be their choice if they want to play or not.”
Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma, despite scoring a 46-ball century, missed out as there is no place for him at No. 3, where the skipper will bat. Similarly, Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad also didn’t make the cut.
With only six ODIs left—three against Sri Lanka being the last batch of 2024—before next year’s Champions Trophy, it was crucial for skipper Rohit and main batter Kohli to play this series to allow the new coach to strategize about team combinations. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been preserved, while Ravindra Jadeja has been rested, considering the ten Tests—five at home and five away—upcoming in the near future.
