Colombian Federation Chief Arrested After Clash with Security Guards Following Copa America Final

Ramon Jesurun, the president of the Colombian Football Federation, was arrested in Miami during a tumultuous scene at the Copa America final on Sunday. According to a police report from Miami-Dade County, Jesurun faces charges of “assault on officer/employee” following an incident at Hard Rock Stadium.

The match, which saw Argentina claim victory over Colombia with a dramatic 1-0 scoreline thanks to Lautaro Martinez’s extra-time goal, was marred by chaos as fans attempted to storm the stadium gates. This led to significant disruptions, resulting in an 80-minute delay to the match’s start.

Jesurun and his family were reportedly denied access to the field after the match for the awards ceremony, prompting a confrontation with security personnel. This altercation escalated, involving Jesurun in a dispute that required police intervention.

The Miami-Dade police reported that the final tally from the event included 27 arrests and 55 ejections from the stadium. Police Director Stephanie Daniels commended the officers for their response to the “volatile situation” and emphasized the need for a thorough review of security protocols for future events.

In a statement, CONMEBOL expressed regret over the violence that overshadowed the final, highlighting that their recommended security measures were not implemented. The governing body noted that the influx of fans without tickets contributed to the chaos, complicating the entry process for those with valid tickets.

Jesurun’s arrest adds to the tumultuous atmosphere surrounding the tournament, raising questions about security and management at major sporting events.
