“CSK Sets Condition for MS Dhoni’s Continuation, Responsibility on BCCI: Report”
Months have passed since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, yet MS Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) remains uncertain. Dhoni relinquished the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad at the beginning of the season. Although CSK did not make the playoffs, Gaikwad’s leadership was a positive takeaway. However, this does not necessarily mean Dhoni’s playing days are over. Reports suggest that Dhoni’s continuation in the IPL hinges on the retention rules set by the BCCI and IPL management.
With a mega auction slated for the IPL 2025 season, there is still ambiguity about the number of players each franchise can retain. According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni will only be able to continue playing if the BCCI permits the retention of 5 to 6 players per franchise.
Currently, the players CSK is most likely to retain include Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube, though the retention order may vary.
Previously, it was reported that IPL officials had called for a meeting with franchise owners on July 31 to discuss retention policies. IPL CEO Hemang Amin had reportedly messaged the franchise owners about the meeting, though specifics on timing and venue were initially unclear.
The meeting is expected to take place on July 31 in the late afternoon or evening, with all franchise owners confirming their attendance. While the exact location has yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated to be held at the Cricket Centre, BCCI headquarters, within the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai.
The report also suggested that the BCCI might allow the retention of 5-6 players per franchise.
