“Did Not Want Someone…”: Ajit Agarkar’s Blunt Take On Hardik-Suryakumar T20I Captaincy Row
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have shed light on the reasons behind Hardik Pandya’s exclusion from leadership roles in the upcoming T20I and ODI tour to Sri Lanka. The headline news from Gambhir’s first squad announcement was Suryakumar Yadav’s elevation to captaincy in the T20 format, with Pandya not even selected as vice-captain across any format. Agarkar hinted that this decision was primarily influenced by concerns over Pandya’s fitness.
During their joint press conference, Agarkar emphasized the rationale behind appointing Suryakumar Yadav as captain, stating, “Surya was made captain because he is one of the deserving candidates. He has been an integral part of the dressing room over the past year, and we value the feedback from within. His cricketing acumen and status as one of the best T20 batsmen globally make him a suitable choice.”
Agarkar further elaborated, “We sought a captain who is likely to be available for all matches. Suryakumar fits this criterion well, and we believe he will grow into the role over time.” The chief selector highlighted the importance of selecting a captain with a proven fitness record, alluding to Pandya’s injury-prone history.
Acknowledging Pandya’s significance to Team India, especially after his stellar performance in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, where he scored 144 runs and took 11 wickets in 8 matches, Agarkar reaffirmed his value to the team. “Hardik remains a vital player for us due to his exceptional all-round abilities. When questioned about the omission of former vice-captain KL Rahul, Agarkar clarified, “I wasn’t involved in KL’s supersession.
