England and Matthew Mott Part Ways as White-Ball Head Coach
ECB Announces Interim Leadership and Future Plans
Matthew Mott has resigned from his position as England’s white-ball head coach following their semi-final exit in the Twenty20 World Cup against eventual champions India last month, according to an announcement by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday.
To fill the vacancy, the ECB has named assistant coach Marcus Trescothick as the interim head coach.
Mott, who took over the role in May 2022, led England to victory in the T20 World Cup later that same year. Under his guidance, the team also secured white-ball series wins against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
“I am incredibly proud to have coached the England men’s team; it has been an honour,” Mott stated. “We have dedicated ourselves to achieving success over the past two years, and I am extremely proud of the team’s character and passion, highlighted by our T20 World Cup triumph in 2022.”
Trescothick, 48, a former England batsman, will temporarily oversee the team for the remainder of the home summer, including a white-ball series against Australia in September.
“Matthew Mott can be proud of his accomplishments as he departs, being one of only three coaches to have won a World Cup with England,” said Rob Key, ECB managing director of England men’s cricket. “Given the rapid succession of three World Cup cycles, I believe the team now needs a fresh direction to face upcoming challenges. This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one for the team’s future success.”
The ECB will now begin the search for a full-time replacement. “It’s crucial that we follow the proper process to find the best candidate for the job,” Key emphasized.
Mott’s leadership tenure is marked by strategic successes and the notable achievement of the 2022 T20 World Cup win. As England transitions under interim leadership, the focus will be on maintaining their competitive momentum and preparing for future international cricket triumphs.
