Gautam Gambhir Leads First Practice Session Ahead of 1st T20I Against Sri Lanka
Gambhir's Inaugural Practice as Head Coach

Newly appointed India head coach Gautam Gambhir led his first training session on Wednesday in preparation for the initial T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. The Indian team reached Colombo on Monday and subsequently traveled to Pallekele in the Central Province. This tour includes three T20Is in Pallekele, followed by three ODIs in Colombo. With Rohit Sharma retiring from T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed captain for the T20I series.
Intense Training and Strategic Guidance
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a video of the practice session on their official X account, showcasing Gambhir’s active involvement. The caption read, “Head Coach Gautam Gambhir Takes Charge!” In the video, Gambhir is seen attentively observing the players and offering strategic batting tips to wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson.
Insights from the Press Conference
Before leaving for Sri Lanka, Gambhir held his first press conference with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar explained the rationale behind appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain over all-rounder Hardik Pandya. “He is one of the deserving candidates and one of the best T20 batters in the world. We wanted a captain who would play in all the games. We will see how he performs,” Agarkar said.
Agarkar also addressed Hardik Pandya’s situation, highlighting his significance to the team despite recent fitness issues. “Hardik remains a very important player. Fitness has been a challenge for him in recent years, which complicates decisions for the coach and selectors. I believe Suryakumar possesses the qualities needed to succeed as a captain,” he added.
