“Gautam Gambhir Opens 2027 ODI World Cup Door for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with One Condition”

A lot of discussion around Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach has focused on the future of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. In his first press conference since taking on the role, Gambhir indicated that despite their age—Rohit at 37 and Kohli at 35—both players are still part of his plans. He suggested that if they maintain their fitness, they could be considered for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gambhir stated, “One thing I can be very clear about is that both of those guys (Rohit and Virat) have a lot of cricket left in them. With the Champions Trophy and a significant tour to Australia coming up, they will certainly be motivated.”

Rohit Sharma is expected to continue as Team India’s captain in ODIs and likely in Tests as well. Following hints from BCCI secretary Jay Shah about Rohit leading India in the 2025 Champions Trophy, Gambhir’s comments reaffirm this decision.
“I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it’s the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup,” Gambhir added.
By the time of the 2027 World Cup, Rohit will be 40 and Kohli 38. However, Gambhir did not rule them out, saying, “Hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, they can be considered for the 2027 World Cup.”
In the press conference, Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar also discussed the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI team, while Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed captain of the T20I side. Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain for both formats, and Hardik Pandya has not been included in the leadership group.
