George Bailey Confirms No Champions Trophy for David Warner
Australia's Chief Selector Praises Warner's Career and Looks Ahead

Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, confirmed on Monday (July 15) that David Warner will not be considered for next year’s Champions Trophy. Warner, who announced his availability for the event after Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup, posted on social media thanking fans and expressing his openness to a comeback.
Bailey clarified the selectors’ stance: “Our understanding is that David is retired and he should be commended on what was an incredible career across all three formats. You never know when Bull’s joking… think he’s just stirring the pot a bit.
“He’s had a wonderful career, and his legacy will only grow. But as far as this team goes, it’s time to transition to some different players.”
Bailey also mentioned that other players like Ashton Agar and Matthew Wade, who were left out of the squads for the white-ball series in the UK, still have a chance for future selections. Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell, only included in the ODI squad, are not ruled out for the next T20 World Cup in 2026.
“I don’t think there’s anyone we’ve put a line through permanently besides David,” Bailey said. “We’re excited about giving Josh [Inglis] a run. The next T20 World Cup is in 2026, so there may be more changes.”
Bailey emphasized the importance of the Champions Trophy for Starc and Maxwell, stating, “The Champions Trophy is very much on the horizon for those guys. Starcy, in particular, will have a huge summer.”
Reflecting on Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign, Bailey stressed integrating younger players like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Cooper Connolly. “The foundation of our T20 side is really good, and we didn’t need to start from scratch. But it’s a great opportunity to explore some new talent.”
Bailey also praised Mitchell Marsh, who will captain both white-ball formats while Pat Cummins rests for the home summer. “I loved the way he captained through the T20 World Cup. He was clear on how he wanted to lead, and he’s done a great job,” Bailey said.
