Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Snub: Kris Srikkanth Challenges Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir’s Justifications
Kris Srikkanth Critiques Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir's Explanation for Hardik Pandya's Exclusion

Former Indian cricketer Kris Srikkanth has expressed his dissatisfaction with the rationale provided by Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir regarding Hardik Pandya’s removal from the T20I captaincy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav will assume the T20I captaincy role, moving away from Pandya. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, cited fitness issues as a significant factor behind the decision. However, Srikkanth remains unconvinced by these reasons.
Fitness Concerns or Other Factors? Srikkanth Questions the Official Justification
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth disputed Agarkar’s claim, questioning whether fitness was genuinely the reason for Pandya’s demotion. Srikkanth pointed out that Pandya’s performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and his role as vice-captain during the World Cup suggested that fitness may not have been the primary issue.
“I think the selectors based their decision on feedback from the dressing room, possibly influenced by this year’s IPL, where Pandya’s team, Mumbai Indians, finished at the bottom,” Srikkanth commented. “Fitness isn’t a valid reason for me. Pandya played the entire IPL and bowled as well. He might not have performed exceptionally, but fitness wasn’t a problem.”
Suryakumar Yadav’s Potential and Leadership Qualities
Srikkanth acknowledged Suryakumar Yadav’s potential to excel as a captain but questioned the transparency of the decision-making process. He suggested that the explanation for dropping Pandya seemed evasive.
“Suryakumar is a fantastic player, and I agree he has the potential to be a great captain. However, the reasons provided for removing Hardik Pandya from the captaincy seem unclear,” Srikkanth added. “The BCCI should have been straightforward about their intentions, stating clearly that they are looking to move forward with Suryakumar for the long term.”
A Call for Honesty in Selection Decisions
Reflecting on his own experience as a selector, Srikkanth emphasized the importance of clear and honest communication in such decisions. “Having served as a chairman myself, I understand the challenges of selecting and dropping players. While I’ve made mistakes, it’s crucial to provide a transparent explanation,” he concluded. “The current justification doesn’t convince me.”
This ongoing debate highlights the complexities and challenges of cricket leadership decisions, and the call for greater transparency in the selection process continues.
