Jasprit Bumrah No Longer India’s Test Vice-Captain? Report Names Rohit Sharma’s New Deputy

Shubman Gill is reportedly set to replace Jasprit Bumrah as the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, according to Revsportz. Previously serving as Rohit Sharma’s deputy in white-ball cricket, Gill is now poised to take on a significant role in red-ball cricket as well. This move positions Gill as a strong contender for future captaincy across all formats. The first Test against Bangladesh will commence on September 19 in Chennai, followed by the second Test on September 27 at Green Park in Nagpur. Additionally, Gill will serve as vice-captain for both the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, newly-appointed T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav emphasized that India will maintain the aggressive style of cricket that defined Rohit Sharma’s tenure. Rohit, who retired from T20Is after leading India to a World Cup victory, had implemented an attacking approach since last year’s ODI showcase at home.

Suryakumar, speaking ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka, stated, “The same train will go ahead; only the engine has changed and the bogies remain unchanged. Nothing changes; the brand of cricket remains the same. The captaincy role doesn’t change anything. It has given me an added responsibility. It is good that now I can do a ‘walk the talk.'”

He further elaborated on the influence of Rohit Sharma, saying, “What I have learnt from Rohit is that he was always a leader on the ground and off it. He was not just a captain — there is a lot of difference between the two. He was a leader who stood in the middle of the group and showed people the way. How to play T20 cricket and how to win a tournament? That is what I have learnt from him.”
