Kumar Sangakkara Yet to Hear from ECB About ‘Exciting Prospect’ of Coaching England

Kumar Sangakkara has expressed that coaching England in limited-overs cricket would be an “exciting prospect,” but he has not yet received a formal approach from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Following the departure of Matthew Mott, who was dismissed after underwhelming performances at the 2023 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup in June, the ECB is searching for a new white-ball coach. Marcus Trescothick has been appointed as caretaker for the upcoming series against Australia, while Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, is seeking a permanent replacement.

Sangakkara, who has worked with England white-ball captain Jos Buttler at the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, acknowledged the speculation about his candidacy but noted that no formal contact has been made. He praised the current leadership in England cricket, including Rob Key and Jos Buttler, and commended the decision-making within the team.

The Sri Lankan cricket legend, who is also the first non-British president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), is content with his current role at the Rajasthan Royals. Sangakkara also expressed his enthusiasm for Chamari Athapaththu’s participation in The Hundred, highlighting her leadership and contributions to Sri Lankan cricket.
