Lionel Messi to Miss Next Two Miami MLS Matches Due to Ankle Injury

Lionel Messi will miss Inter Miami’s upcoming two Major League Soccer matches following an ankle injury sustained during Argentina’s Copa America final victory. Miami’s coach, Gerardo Martino, confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating that the 37-year-old star injured his right ankle in the 64th minute of the match against Colombia, which ended in a 1-0 win. Messi was seen leaving the field with a visibly swollen ankle.

As a result, Messi will be side-lined for Inter Miami’s home games against Toronto FC on Wednesday and the Chicago Fire on Saturday. Martino indicated that further testing is needed to assess the severity of the injury, saying, “He has to have more tests and wait for the results.”

In a message shared on Instagram, Messi expressed gratitude for the support and concern he received after the match. He wrote, “I want to thank everyone for the messages and greetings. I’m fine, thank God, and I hope I can soon be on the field again enjoying what I like to do most.”

Despite the injury setback, Inter Miami remains in a strong position in the league, sitting second in the MLS and the Eastern Conference with 47 points from 23 matches, just one point behind Cincinnati. This comes after a tough loss to Cincinnati, where Miami was defeated 6-1 on July 6.

Looking ahead, Inter Miami is preparing to defend their Leagues Cup title against rivals from both MLS and the Mexican league next week. The team will need to rally together in Messi’s absence as they navigate this crucial period in their season.
