Sanath Jayasuriya Enforces Discipline in Sri Lankan Cricket Team Ahead of T20I Series Against India
Interim Head Coach Implements New Rules for Upcoming Matches

As Sri Lanka gears up for their white-ball series against India, newly appointed interim head coach Sanath Jayasuriya is emphasizing discipline within the team. Jayasuriya, who will lead Sri Lanka for the T20I series and the subsequent tour of England, has introduced new regulations, including mandates for proper haircuts and the removal of piercings.
Jayasuriya highlighted the importance of maintaining cricket’s image as “the gentlemen’s game” and aims to set a standard for current and future players. He believes that by fostering discipline, players can serve as role models for young cricketers.
Supporting Jayasuriya’s stance, Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Harin Fernando has advocated for modesty among cricketers, suggesting that humble behavior could reduce criticism following match losses. Fernando’s comments reflect a broader push for professionalism and respect within the sport.
Jayasuriya also noted the opportunity presented by the absence of key Indian players—Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja—who have retired from T20Is. He emphasized the need for Sri Lanka to capitalize on this situation to maximize their performance.
The T20I series will commence on July 27, followed by matches on July 28 and 30 at the Pallekele International Stadium. This will be followed by three ODIs starting August 2 in Colombo.
