Novak Djokovic Withdraws from ATP Canadian Open: Focus Shifts to Paris Olympics and US Open

"Novak Djokovic Withdraws from ATP Canadian Open to Focus on Paris Olympics and US Open Preparation"

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic has officially withdrawn from the ATP Canadian Open, scheduled to take place in Montreal next week, according to Tennis Canada. The 37-year-old Serbian tennis legend, who has amassed 24 Grand Slam titles throughout his illustrious career, will not participate in this key hardcourt event that is a crucial warm-up for the US Open starting on August 26.

Djokovic, who recently advanced to the third round of the Paris Olympics with a notable victory over Spain’s Rafael Nadal, cited his commitment to the ongoing Olympics and his strategic focus on the remainder of the season as reasons for his decision. Tournament director Valerie Tetreault expressed regret over Djokovic’s absence but acknowledged the importance of his preparation for future competitions and extended well wishes for his Olympic and seasonal goals.

The withdrawal of Djokovic, a dominant force in tennis with 98 career ATP titles, means that Russian player Roman Safiullin, ranked 66th in the world, will secure a spot in the Canadian Open’s main draw. The tournament’s schedule has been altered to accommodate the Olympics, with main draw matches now beginning on August 6 and concluding on August 12.
