Enzo Fernández Apologizes for Offensive Chant About French Team

Chelsea Midfielder Faces Backlash Over Copa América Celebration Video

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández issued a public apology after a video surfaced showing him and his Argentina teammates singing a song with racist and homophobic slurs directed at the French national team. The incident occurred during celebrations following Argentina’s Copa América victory over Colombia.

“I want to sincerely apologize for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations,” Fernández stated. “The song contains highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words.”

Chelsea Football Club swiftly condemned the discriminatory behavior, labeling it as completely unacceptable, and has initiated an internal disciplinary procedure.

The French Football Federation (FFF) announced its intention to file a legal complaint, denouncing the chant as contrary to the principles of sport and human rights.

FIFA acknowledged the incident and stated that it is investigating the matter, reaffirming its stance against all forms of discrimination.

The video has sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for accountability within the football community, including from Fernández’s Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana, who highlighted the incident on social media as an example of racism in football today.
