“Ravichandran Ashwin Responds to Criticism Over Non-Striker Run-Out Warning”
Ravichandran Ashwin, a strong advocate for running out batters at the non-striker’s end, recently faced a warning himself for backing up too far during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match between Dindigul Dragons and Nellai Royal Kings. The incident occurred in the 15th over when left-arm spinner Mohan Prasath halted his run-up after noticing Ashwin out of his crease. Replays showed Ashwin’s bat slipping out of the popping crease as Prasath paused.
This incident sparked debates on social media, with some trolling Ashwin for facing his own tactic, while others noted that Ashwin wasn’t gaining any unfair advantage. Ashwin is currently not part of the white-ball tour in Sri Lanka but is expected to return for the home Test series against Bangladesh.
India recently secured a seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a rain-affected second T20I, leading the series 2-0. The final T20I is set for Tuesday in Pallekele, followed by a three-match ODI series. Key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Kuldeep Yadav, and Harshit Rana have arrived in Colombo for the ODI series.
Ashwin shared a screenshot of the law, indicating that he wouldn’t have been out even if the bowler had removed the bails. According to law 38.3, “a non-striker is liable to be run out from the moment the ball comes into play until the bowler is expected to release the ball.”
Responding to criticism that commentators failed to highlight this rule, Ashwin said, “Cos they don’t know the rule.”
