“Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma Nominated for ICC Women’s Player of the Month”
India’s star openers, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, have been nominated for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for July 2024, alongside Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu. This recognition highlights their exceptional performances throughout the month.
Smriti Mandhana’s Prolific July
Smriti Mandhana, India’s vice-captain and a left-handed opener, is aiming for back-to-back ICC Women’s Player of the Month awards. She claimed the title in June 2024 and has continued her impressive form into July. Mandhana began the month with a career-best 149 in a one-off Test against South Africa in Chennai. This innings, combined with a solid partnership with Shafali Verma, set a record for the highest-ever first-wicket partnership in Women’s Tests.
Mandhana’s performance didn’t stop there. She contributed significantly in the T20I series against South Africa, scoring 100 runs across two innings, including a crucial 54 not out in the final T20I, which helped India win the series. Her form continued in the Women’s Asia Cup, where she amassed 173 runs and was the top scorer in the final, making 60 runs from 47 balls.
Shafali Verma’s Record-Breaking Month
Shafali Verma also had an outstanding month, making her a deserving nominee. In July, Verma accumulated 229 runs in Tests and 245 runs in T20Is. Her highlight was a historic double century in the one-off Test against South Africa, scoring 205 runs, which is the fastest double century in Women’s Test history. This innings, alongside Mandhana, contributed to India’s record total of 603/6 and their ten-wicket victory.
In the T20I series against South Africa, Verma scored 45 runs, and in the Women’s Asia Cup, she was the second-highest run-scorer with 200 runs at an impressive strike rate of 140.84. Her performances included a swift 40 off 29 balls against Pakistan and a career-best 81 off 48 balls against Nepal.
Chamari Athapaththu’s Captaincy and Batting Prowess
Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu has also been recognized for her outstanding performances. As captain, she led Sri Lanka to victory in the Women’s Asia Cup on home soil. Athapaththu scored 304 runs during the tournament at an average of 101.33 and a strike rate of 146.85. Her notable innings included an unbeaten 119 against Malaysia, and crucial half-centuries in the semi-final and final, leading Sri Lanka to a memorable triumph.
