Former Sri Lanka U-19 World Cup captain Dhammika Niroshana tragically passed away on Wednesday after being shot by an unidentified assailant outside his residence in Ambalangoda, Galle. The 41-year-old cricketer was at home with his wife and two children when the incident occurred.

Local authorities have launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrator responsible for the shooting. Initial reports suggest that a 12-bore rifle was used in the attack.

Niroshana was once considered a promising talent in Sri Lanka’s youth cricket system during the early 2000s. He made his debut for the Sri Lanka U-19 team in 2000 and later captained the side during the 2002 Under-19 World Cup. His team included future international stars such as Farveez Maharoof, Jeevan Mendis, Dhammika Prasad, and Upul Tharanga. Niroshana performed credibly in the tournament, taking seven wickets in five matches at an average of 19.28, with a best bowling figure of 3/38.

In addition to his Under-19 exploits, Niroshana also made appearances in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket. He debuted in First-Class cricket during the 2001-02 season and played 12 matches over three years for teams like Galle CC, Singha SC, and Chilaw Marians, claiming a total of 19 wickets. His last professional match took place in December 2004, when he played for Galle Cricket Club.

The tragic loss of Dhammika Niroshana has deeply saddened the cricketing community in Sri Lanka and beyond, reflecting on his promising career cut short under tragic circumstances.
