FIFA Initiates Probe into Argentina Players’ Racist Chants

FIFA has launched an investigation into racist chants by Argentina players following their Copa America victory. A spokesperson for FIFA stated that they are aware of a video circulating on social media and are looking into the incident, strongly condemning any form of discrimination. The chants, heard during a live video posted by Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez from the team bus after their Copa victory over Colombia, included racist and homophobic insults targeting France’s Kylian Mbappe.

Chelsea, where Fernandez plays, announced an internal disciplinary procedure in response. Fernandez apologized publicly, acknowledging the offensive language used in the chants and stating his stance against discrimination. Chelsea emphasized their zero-tolerance policy towards discriminatory behavior and expressed intentions to use the incident as an educational opportunity.

Javier Mascherano, coach of Argentina’s Olympic football team, defended Fernandez, describing the video as taken out of context and asserting Argentina’s inclusive nature. He emphasized Fernandez’s character, denying any racial issues, and highlighting Argentina’s multiculturalism and inclusive treatment of people from diverse backgrounds.

The French Football Federation (FFF) formally complained to FIFA about the incident, with FFF president Philippe Diallo condemning the remarks as racist and discriminatory against French players.
