“We Want to Seal the Series on Saturday”: Shubman Gill’s Bold Remark After India’s 2-1 Lead Over Zimbabwe
India Captain Praises Team's "Remarkable" Performance on Tough Pitch
India captain Shubman Gill lauded his team’s “remarkable” effort on a challenging wicket as they secured a 23-run victory over Zimbabwe in the third T20I, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series in Harare on Wednesday. Gill, returning to form with a stellar 49-ball 66, powered India to 182 for four, while the bowlers restricted Zimbabwe to 159 for six.
India’s Resounding Comeback
“It was a crucial match for us, and the way we started with batting and bowling was remarkable,” Gill said during the post-match presentation. India’s victory marked their second successive win, bouncing back impressively after a loss in the first match.
Batting on a Double-Paced Wicket
Asked if he was disappointed that the team couldn’t reach 200 in the third T20, Gill explained, “…the wicket was a bit double-paced, the odd ball was gripping, and it was not easy to hit the length ball. We just wanted to keep hitting the length with the ball as well. We know if there is something in the wicket, it will be there for the bowlers. Everyone has contributed, right from openers to bowlers.”
Washington Sundar’s Stellar Performance
Washington Sundar, who was named Player of the Match, expressed his satisfaction with his execution, taking three wickets for 15 runs in four overs. “Feels amazing, honestly. Every time I play for the country, it seems amazing. It was a better wicket. There was something more for the bowlers in the first two games. The way Zimbabwe batters played did put pressure on us. We wanted to execute everything in our plans. We want to finish the series on Saturday.”
Zimbabwe’s Struggles and Raza’s Reflections
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza lamented the fielding lapses that contributed to their loss. “I think it’s the fielding again. We are proud of our fielding, but the wheels came off today. We gave away 20 extra runs, and we lost by 23 runs,” he said.
Despite being 19 for 3 in the fourth over, Zimbabwe found hope through Dion Myers’ unbeaten 65 off 49 deliveries. Raza highlighted the ongoing issues with their top order but expressed confidence in their potential. “We still have problems at the top, but I have utmost faith in them that they will come good sometime. We have tried 15 different partners in the last year or so. It’s time that our players, including myself, take up the responsibility.”
Looking AheadThe fourth T20I between India and Zimbabwe will be played on Saturday, with India aiming to seal the series victory.
