India Set to Defend Title as Women's Asia Cup 2024 Kicks Off in Sri Lanka

The Indian women’s cricket team has landed in Sri Lanka, preparing to defend their title in the Women’s Asia Cup, which begins on Friday. India, the reigning champions, will start their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dambulla on the opening day.

A video shared by the BCCI highlights the camaraderie and excitement among the team, featuring players like Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Varma, Renuka Singh, Shreyanka Patil, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur during their flight from Chennai to Dambulla.

The tournament will feature 15 matches, including teams from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the UAE, Thailand, and Nepal. Group A consists of Pakistan, India, Nepal, and the UAE, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Malaysia.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals on July 26, with the final set for July 28 in Dambulla.

Ahead of the Women’s Asia Cup, the Indian team has enjoyed a series of successes. They recently secured a 3-0 victory over South Africa in an ODI series and drew a one-off Test match in June-July. Additionally, they tied the three-match T20I series 1-1, with one match washed out by rain. Earlier in the year, India triumphed in a 5-0 T20I series win against Bangladesh from April to May.

Between December and January, India hosted Australia for a series that included a one-off Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is. India won the Test but lost the ODI series 0-3 and the T20I series 1-2.

These matches serve as crucial preparation for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for October 3-20 in Bangladesh, where India aims to capture their first major ICC women’s trophy.
