“Sourav Ganguly Set to Replace Ricky Ponting as Delhi Capitals Coach? Major Update Revealed”

Delhi Capitals Seek New Coach Following Ricky Ponting’s Departure

Following the departure of two-time World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting, the IPL franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) is actively searching for new leadership. Ponting, who served as DC’s head coach for seven years, left a significant mark on the team, guiding them to a runner-up finish in 2020. As the team gears up for the IPL 2025 season and the upcoming mega auction, the franchise is keen on appointing a coach who can bring fresh energy and strategic insight.

Contrary to some reports, sources close to the franchise have indicated that Sourav Ganguly, the current Director of Cricket for DC, is not in the running for the head coach position. Instead, the team is looking for a candidate who is deeply engaged with the cricket circuit and has a hands-on approach, akin to Gautam Gambhir’s successful stint as a mentor.

“Ganguly already has numerous responsibilities, including planning various aspects for the franchise. The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively, much like Gautam Gambhir. His success as a mentor speaks volumes,” a source told News 18 on condition of anonymity.

The search for a new coach is crucial, especially with the mega auction looming. The franchise management is not looking for a temporary solution; they want a dedicated leader who can steer the team through the new cycle post-auction. “The management doesn’t want a stop-gap arrangement for the head coach position as it’s the season right after the mega auction,” the source added.

A significant meeting among DC’s higher-ups is expected to take place after the conclusion of the ongoing Major League Cricket season in the USA. This meeting will likely be pivotal in determining the new coaching structure.

Since their impressive performance in 2020, where they reached the final, the Delhi Capitals have struggled to replicate that success, failing to qualify for the IPL playoffs in subsequent seasons. In the 2024 IPL season, they finished sixth among ten teams.

Despite these challenges, DC players have made notable contributions on the international stage. Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel were key players in India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. These stars, along with Australia’s rising talent Jake Fraser-McGurk, are strong contenders to be retained by the Capitals ahead of the mega auction.

As Delhi Capitals prepare for a new chapter, the appointment of a dynamic and involved head coach will be critical in revitalizing the team and striving for their first IPL title.
